Currency of New Zealand
The currency of New Zealand is New Zealand Dollar. It is denoted by NZ$ and the ISO code for it is NZD. New Zealand Dollar is subdivided in to 100 cents. The local currency was introduced in 1967 by replacing pounds. The first coins of New Zealand Dollar were 1c and 2c were made up of bronze, while 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c were made of cupronickel. All these coins featured the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. $1 and $2 coins were introduced in 1991, which were made up of aluminum-bronze.
The first New Zealand Dollar banknotes were issued in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 and $100. Later on $50 note was introduced just to reduce the gap between $20 and $100 notes. In 1991, $1 and $2 notes were replaced by coins. Sir Edmund Hillary, Kate Sheppard, Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Apirana Ngata and Lord Rutherford of Nelson were featured on $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes respectively. New Zealand Dollar is one of the most traded currencies in the world and is one of the strong currencies in the world. Informally it is also known as “kiwi”, because kiwi is associated with the New Zealand and it is also featured on the $1 coin.
