Currency of Nicaragua
The currency of Nicaragua is Córdoba. The sign of Cordoba is C$ and the ISO 4217 code for it is NIO. Currency was given name of Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba, who was the founder of Nicaragua. Córdoba is subdivided into 100 centavos. The first Córdoba replaced the peso on March 20, 1912. The Bank of Nicaragua issued coins which were in denominations of ½, 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos and 1 Córdoba. In 1987, the new series of coins were issued in the denominations of 5, 10 and 25 centavos and 500 Córdoba made up of aluminum, 50 centavos, 1 and 5 Córdobas made up of aluminum bronze. The banknotes of first Córdoba were issued in the denominations of 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000.
Second Córdoba were issued in 1988 consisting of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 Córdobas. Notes of 20,000, 50,000, 1,000,000 and 10,000,000 Córdoba were issued in 1989. On the other hand coins were not issued. Third Córdoba banknotes were in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Córdobas issued in 2002. Miguel Larreynaga, Jose Santos Zelaya, Pedro Joaquin, Ruben Dario and Jose Dolares were featured in these notes. The 2009 series of Córdoba notes were made of polymer.
