Currency of Luxembourg
The Currency in use in Luxembourg Euro. It is further subdivided into 100 Centime (French) or cent (German). From 1854 to 1999, the official currency of this region was known as Franc. Until 2002 due to the principle of “no obligation and no prohibition”, day-to-day financial transactions could be completed in Euro / Franc but cash payments could only be made with Francs as currency notes and coins of Euro were not printed and minted. Coins of Luxembourg’s currency were started to min in 1854 with denominations of 2½, 5 and 10 centimes. These 5 and 10 centimes coins were minted with bronze material, which was later changed to cupro-nickel in 1901. In 1915, when German Forces took over the territory, coins of 5, 10 and 25 centimes were issued by them. The International Bank was responsible for the issuance Luxembourg’s currency notes. In 1914, State Treasury notes were issued with denominations of Francs and Mark. The second series notes were started to print in 1919 with denominations of 50 centimes and 500 francs. The story went on and banknotes of Luxembourg country transformed in many years in 1923, 1932, 1944, 1949, 1987 and 1993.
