Bituminous, peat and anthracite are coal. Anthracite is a hard, compact variety of mineral coal that has a high luster. Peat, or turf, is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter. Bituminous coal or black coal is a relatively soft coal containing a ratlike substance called bitumen. It is of higher quality than lignite coal but of poorer quality than anthracite coal.
