According to MSNBC a newborn in Sierra Leone has the lowest chance of surviving until age 5. Can we just stop and imagine that for a second? This is what happens to a country that emerges from a decade of civil war.

In 2002, what we know as Sierra Leone came into being with the help of 17000 troops of the United Nation disarming tens of thousands of rebels and militia fighters. The atrocities committed by the rebels during the war where hacking of the feet and hands was a trademark of victims resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocents. Charles Taylor a Liberian politician was convicted guilty by judges in aiding war crimes in the Sierra Leone Civil War.

While the country sits at the top of a massive reservoir of gold, diamonds and other natural resources. Still poverty, death and disease are the major challenges it faces today. During mid 2012, a cholera outbreak spread throughout the country killing several children and causing the President Ernest Bai Koroma to declare a national state of emergency. Health ministers stated the past conflict massive migration from rural to urban areas as the major reason for the outbreak.
