Which is the Largest Island of Antarctica?
The largest island of Antarctica is Alexander Island. Antarctica which is also the most uninhabited continent of the world has no permanent population. It is situated in the Antarctic region of southern hemisphere and is surrounded by Southern Ocean. Area of this continent is about 14.0 million (square kilometers), which make it the fifth largest continent of the world. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice, that’s why it is considered as the coldest, driest and windiest continent.
Alexander Island lies in the Bellingshausen Sea. There are few ice free areas of this island because it is completely covered by ice. In south, it is 240 km wide and if we talk about north it is 80 km wide while in the north-south direction it is 390 km long. Population of this island is 0, on the basis of permanent residents. And it is considered as the second most uninhabited island of the world after “Devon island”, which is the most uninhabited island covering 55,247 square kilometers. These days Alexander Island is used as Meteorological centers (for the study of atmosphere) and refueling base.
