Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest combat aircraft in the world. In order to measure the speed of a combat aircraft, Mach unit is used. This unit of speed measures the speed of an object which travels nearly to the speed of sound and the speed of Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is 3.2+. In normal circumstances, the speed of sound is Mach 1 which means that Lockheed SR-71 can travel three times faster than the speed of sound. The competition for the fastest aircraft in the world started with Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 which was built by Soviet Union during the sixties of 20th century. After that United States launched its fastest aircraft SR-71 which served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. It was named as the fastest manned aircraft in the world in 1976. U.S air force built 32 SR-71 air crafts out of which 12 were destroyed because of accidents.
