Afghanistan is a landlocked country of Asia. It ranks 42 among the most populated countries of the world. The National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the parliament of the country. President Hamid Karzai presides over the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly, the two important political bodies of the country. President Hamid Karzai has been in power since 2001. The present parliament has been elected in the year 2004. It is serving a second term after being re-elected in the year 2010. The Women members of the parliament consist of twenty-eight percent of the total members.

The National Assembly of Afghanistan forms the country’s national legislature. It is a bicameral legislature, therefore consisting of two houses, namely: the House of the People and the House of Elders. The House of the People is locally known as the “Wolesi Jirga” in the Pashto language. It is the lower house of the National Assembly. It has 249 representatives who are elected for a term of 5 years. The House of the People has the major responsibility of making the county’s laws. On the other hand, the upper house, the House of Elders, is known as the “Mesherani Jirga” in the Pashto language. It consists of 102 members.
