Currency of Kyrgyzstan

The national currency of Kyrgyzstan is Som. The ISO code of Som is KGS and one Som is divisible to 100 tyiyn. “Som” is sometimes pronounced as “sum” or “soum”. The word some is translated as pure in many languages like Kazakh and Kyrgyz. It became the official currency of Kyrgyzstan in 1993 and before this introduction, people used to make financial transactions with Soviet ruble. It was very late when currency coins started to circulate in the country in January 2008. Kyrgyzstan became the first state among Soviet republics to issue the coinage currency while Belarus is still waiting to take the step. The nickel-plated steel and brass plated steel coins of Kyrgyzstan were issued with denominations of 10 and 50 tyiyn, and 1, 3 and 5 som. The banknotes circulate in the country with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. These notes have emerged from many changes right from their issuance. The first change was made in 1994 after the issuance date of 10 May 1993. Then more variation were seen in 1997 with beautiful designs and variant colors. The last mintage of banknotes was undergone several modifications in 2009 and 2010. Now these notes are available in red, orange, blue, yellow, violet, grey and green colors with different designs and reflections of important place of Kyrgyzstan. These places include Lake Issyk-Kul, Manas Mausoleum, Takhti Sulaiman, Mount Sulaiman and Ala-Too square.
