The current currency of Israel is the Israeli new shekel and it is frequently exchanged with US dollars. The historical currencies of Israel were Palestinian pound, Israeli lira / Israeli pound and old shekel. The coins are circulated in the country with denominations of 5, 10 and 50 agorot and 1, 5, 10 shekels. The first coins were minted in 1948 and 1949. These were aluminium 25 mil pieces. In the later periods, these were issued with the units of prutah and had wider denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 250. The Otte Wallish, a popular Israeli graphics designer, crafted design on those coins.

The bank notes of new shekel are available with denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200. To exchange Israeli new shekel, the international airport, banks, post offices and registered currency enterprises are the best options. Though, banks in Israel are open on Sundays, it is not wise to get into any sort of transaction on that day because of excessive service charges. On an average, it could be 10 times higher than regular days. It is better to wait until Monday, as no currency trade is done on Sundays worldwide. If someone visits Israel, he/she can use other medium of exchanges like credit cards, debit cards and State of bonds of state of Israel as well.
