Currency of Greece
The current currency of Greece is Euro but it has long currency history. In 1822 after the independence Grocci (Turkish) coins were used before they were replaced by the Drachmae in 1841. They were issued by The National Bank of Greece. The coin issued were of value 10, 25, 100 and 500 until in 1885 when coins of 1, 2 and 5 were also issued. In 1900 notes of value 10, 25, 100, 500, 1000 drachma was issued. In 1944, The National Bank of Greece took a major step when they issued notes with higher values like 50k, 100k, 1000k drachma. But soon these notes were abandoned and highest note was limited to 20k drachms. Greece is also known has Hellenic Republic and is located in Europe. It has great ancient history and approximately 16.5 million tourists visit Greece every year, which is more than the country’s entire population.
When European Union introduced Euro in 1999; Greece was among other nine countries to declare Euro as their official currency. Nevertheless, the news is circulating now that Greece will exit the Euro zone next year (2013). This news has even been confirmed by Greece Parliament that they will launch their local currency.
