The currency of Ghana is Cedi. Its symbol is ¢ is a letter C. After the independence pound was declared as official currency of Ghana. The pound was replaced by Cedi which was introduced in 1965 at a rate of 2.4 Cedi = 1 pound. The second Cedi was introduced in1967 which replaced first Cedi at the rate of 2 Cedi = 1 pound. In 1979 new banknotes were issued. In 1982 the 50¢ was demonetized. The demonetization of 50 Cedi is a still controversy and was not fully justified by the government that time. After the demonetization of 50 Cedi the highest value Cedi was of 20.

The third edition of Cedi was introduced by The Bank of Ghana on 1st July 2007. The new ISO code GHS for Cedi was also introduced on the same date. A new symbol for third Cedi GH¢ was also introduced by The Bank of Ghana to distinguish third Cedi from second Cedi. Currently the Cedi notes under circulation are 1,2,5,10,20 and 50. Ghana got independence from the United Kingdom on 6th Match 1957. It was declared a republic on 1st July 1960. Only 3.5% of Ghana is covered with water.
