Capital Of Saint Lucia
The capital of Saint Lucia is Castries; build on a flood gut of reclaimed land, stretching over 30.5 square miles, hosting a population of 61, 341 people. The city is home to the government seat and head offices of local and foreign business. Designed in a grid pattern similar to that of a metropolitan city like New York, it has sheltered harbors which receive cargo vessels, ferry boats and cruise ships. Its transit network consists of well served buses and taxis.
French were the founder of Castries in 1650, calling it “Carenage” at that time; following a devastating hurricane in 1780, the early settlements here were abandoned. From the 1803 to 1844, the British turned the town into a naval port and built forts on the mountain, Morne fortune, which overlooked the harbor. Slowly, Castries had a considerable population, and was the only port on the Caribbean that could accommodate the Royal Navy. It also underwent a number of rebuilds in the later years, owing to various major fires. Now, it contains St. Lucia’s main post office, duty free shopping facilities, many restaurants with variety of cuisines, supermarkets, and other shopping facilities. It is one of the major tourist areas of St. Lucia, being a port of call for cruise ships; some of its famous beaches and landmarks make it another big attraction for tourists.
