The capital of Panama is Panama City; also called the Gamma World City, it is considered as the most important city of Central America. Located on the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, in the province of Panama, it has a population of 1, 727, 672 people. The city is the central hub of international banking and commerce, along with being the political and administrative center of the country. The International Living magazine counted Panama among the top five places for retirement in the world. Surrounded by a tropical rainforest, Panama has high-rise buildings, clouding its skyline.

It was founded on August 15, 1519 by Pedro Aria Davila, a Spanish conquistador; it soon became the starting point for expeditions that invaded the Inca Empire in Peru. Panama has suffered destruction at the hands of a fire in 1673, set by a pirate; the city was reestablished two years later in a peninsula that was 8km away from the original site. With a tropical wet and dry climate, the city has the largest and busiest airport in Central America, the Tocumen International Airport. Its economy is service based, inclined more towards banking, commerce, and tourism; hence, depending on trade and shipping activities for its finances. The city excels in boxing, baseball, basketball, and football; and has produced a number of famous sports players.
