The capital of Rwanda is Kigali, the largest city of the country; with a population of almost 1 million people. Ever since it became the capital in 1962, Kigali is the geographic center of the nation, as well as the economical, cultural, and transport hub of Rwanda. It is home to the President of Rwanda, along with the houses and offices of the government ministries. The city covers a total area of 730km2.

Founded in 1907 by the Germans, Kigali did not obtain the title of being the capital until Rwanda was independent in 1962; even though Butare was in the running list to be capital of the country, Kigali was given preference due to its central location. Since then, the city has continued to grow and prosper, earning itself the central cultural, political and economic position. The city has seen and hosted some of the most brutal genocide in Rwanda, with the slaughter of one million Tutsi and moderate Hutu by the Hutu militias, the different ethnic groups in Central Africa; armies of the Hutu have fought the Tutsi here damaging the structure of the city greatly. However, the city recovered itself, housing several memorials, museums, and centers dedicated to the genocide. Built in a hilly country, between valleys and ridges, the city qualifies as a tourist attraction for the country.
